Tarangire est la capitale des éléphants du circuit nord ? des baobabs millénaires dominant une rivière qui garde le parc vert et giboyeux longtemps après la fin des pluies.

Nommé d'après la rivière Tarangire qui le traverse, ce parc est l'un des plus sous-estimés de Tanzanie. En saison sèche, la rivière devient la seule source d'eau fiable sur des kilomètres, attirant d'énormes troupeaux d'éléphants ? souvent 200 individus ou plus dans un seul groupe familial ? ainsi que zèbres, gnous et élands de la steppe maasaï environnante.

Ce qui distingue Tarangire visuellement, ce sont ses baobabs millénaires, aux troncs assez larges pour y garer un véhicule, dispersés sur une herbe dorée parsemée de termitières. Plus calme que le Serengeti ou le Ngorongoro, avec bien moins de véhicules par observation, c'est un ajout apprécié des voyageurs qui veulent du gros gibier sans la foule.

When are the elephant herds biggest?

July to October, the dry season, when the river is the only water for miles and herds concentrate along its length. In the wet season many animals disperse into the surrounding plains.

Is Tarangire good for a night walk or walking safari?

Yes, guided walking safaris are available in parts of the park and in the adjacent Manyara Ranch, something not permitted in the Serengeti or Ngorongoro Crater.
