This four-day safari links two of northern Tanzania's best game parks with a full day off the beaten track in Mto wa Mbu — a genuine, working town rather than a manufactured cultural stop. You start in Tarangire among some of Africa's largest elephant herds and thousand-year-old baobabs, then trade the vehicle for a bicycle and a walking guide in Mto wa Mbu, before descending into the Ngorongoro Crater for the most concentrated wildlife viewing in Tanzania, and finishing on the flamingo-lined shore of Lake Manyara.

It is built for travellers who want the classic northern circuit parks without skipping the people who live alongside them. Two nights are spent in the Karatu/Mto wa Mbu area, which sits within easy reach of both the crater rim and the lake, keeping driving times short and game-viewing time long.

Arusha 120 km 2 hours Tarangire National Park

Arusha to Tarangire National Park

Depart Arusha after breakfast and drive around two hours to Tarangire National Park. Spend the full day on game drives along the Tarangire River, the dry-season lifeline that draws some of the largest elephant herds in Africa — often 200 or more in a single family group — alongside zebra, wildebeest, giraffe and, with luck, tree-climbing lions. The park's ancient baobabs, some over a thousand years old, give it one of the most striking landscapes on the northern circuit. In the late afternoon, continue on to your lodge near Mto wa Mbu or Karatu for dinner and overnight.

Spend the day off the safari circuit in Mto wa Mbu, a farming and trading town at the base of the Rift Valley escarpment where more than a hundred ethnic groups live and work side by side. A local guide leads a village walk through banana, rice and coffee plantations, with stops to taste home-brewed banana beer and see Makonde wood carving and Tingatinga painting up close. Swap the walk for a bicycle to cover more ground through the irrigated farmland, visit a women's handicraft workshop, and share a local meal cooked the way Mto wa Mbu families cook every day. It is a slower, hands-on day between two big game parks, and one most guests remember as much as the wildlife.

After an early breakfast, drive to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and descend 600 metres onto the floor of the world's largest intact volcanic caldera. Around 25,000 large animals live within its walls year-round, making it one of the most reliable places in Africa to see the Big Five in a single morning — lion, elephant, buffalo and leopard are near-certain, and the crater holds Tanzania's best remaining population of the endangered black rhino. Descending early gives the best chance of rhino and predator sightings before the heat sets in. Hippos wallow in the Gorigor Swamp and, seasonally, flamingos line the shallow soda waters of Lake Magadi. Climb back up the crater wall in the afternoon and return to your lodge in Karatu.

After breakfast, drive to Lake Manyara National Park for a morning game drive through groundwater forest, open grassland and the flamingo-fringed edge of the soda lake itself. Manyara is famous for its tree-climbing lions and its dense birdlife — over 400 species recorded — as well as elephant, buffalo and giraffe along the lakeshore. With the Rift Valley escarpment rising behind the park, it is one of the most scenic short game drives on the northern circuit. After lunch, continue the drive back to Arusha, arriving in the late afternoon where your safari ends.

Questions about this safari

Is the Mto wa Mbu day physically demanding?

No — it is paced for all fitness levels. The village walk and cycling are on flat ground and can be shortened, and the day is as much about conversation and craft workshops as physical activity.

Will we definitely see the black rhino in Ngorongoro?

No sighting in the wild is ever guaranteed, but Ngorongoro Crater is genuinely one of the best places in Africa for it — we descend early, when rhinos are most active, to give you the best possible chance.

Why two nights in Karatu instead of moving each day?

Karatu sits close to both the Ngorongoro crater rim and Lake Manyara, so basing there for two nights cuts driving time and leaves more hours for game viewing instead of transfers.

Can this itinerary be extended to include the Serengeti?

Yes, this is commonly extended to six or seven days by adding the Serengeti after the Ngorongoro Crater — ask us for a tailored version.

What vehicle and group size should I expect?

A 4WD safari Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof for game viewing and photography, shared with a maximum of six guests; private vehicles are available on request.
