Makuyuni is the junction on the Arusha?Ngorongoro highway where the Great North Road splits toward Lake Manyara and Serengeti ? a small but busy trading town that marks the real start of the safari country.
Most travellers pass through Makuyuni without stopping, but it is worth a slower look. It sits at the point where the tarmac from Arusha forks ? one road continuing to Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro and the Serengeti, the other running toward Lake Eyasi and the Hadzabe territory to the south. Roadside stalls sell carvings, Maasai beadwork and fresh produce, and the small market is a genuine slice of rural Tanzanian commerce rather than something built for tourists.
For travellers with time, a stop at Makuyuni's market or roadside curio stands is a good, low-pressure way to see everyday Tanzanian life and pick up souvenirs directly from the people who make them, before the tarmac gives way to the dust roads of the parks ahead.
The road split for Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro and Serengeti to the west, and Lake Eyasi to the south.
Everyday trading in produce, Maasai beadwork and woodcarvings, unpolished for tourists.
A well-known stop for souvenir shopping, with prices open to friendly negotiation.
The road west from here begins its climb toward the Rift Valley wall and Mto wa Mbu.
Not really ? it is a junction town, and most visitors experience it as a short stop for the market or a fuel and toilet break on the way between Arusha and the northern parks.
Wood carvings, Maasai beadwork, batik cloth and fresh produce are all sold at roadside stalls. It is a good spot for souvenirs at fairer prices than inside the parks.
About 90 minutes to two hours by road, depending on traffic through the town of Mto wa Mbu.
