Stretto tra la scarpata della Rift Valley e un lago di soda poco profondo, Manyara racchiude foresta di falda acquifera, prateria aperta e acque basse orlate di rosa in uno dei parchi più compatti e scenografici della Tanzania.

Ernest Hemingway definì un tempo il Lago Manyara "il più bello che avessi visto in Africa", e la descrizione regge ancora oggi. Il parco si estende in una stretta fascia lungo la base della scarpata della Rift Valley, cosicché un solo game drive attraversa una fitta foresta di falda acquifera piena di cercopitechi blu e gruppi di babbuini, per poi aprirsi su praterie dove pascolano bufali e giraffe, e infine costeggiare le rive del lago stesso, dove stormi di fenicotteri tingono di rosa le acque basse.

Manyara è nota soprattutto per i suoi leoni che si arrampicano sugli alberi, i quali si issano su acacie e alberi di salsiccia per sfuggire al caldo e alle mosche tsetse — un comportamento osservabile solo in pochissimi luoghi al mondo. Il lago stesso, un bacino alcalino poco profondo che si espande e si ritira con le stagioni, richiama un gran numero di uccelli acquatici ed è un momento clou per i fotografi anche in una breve visita.

The dry months of June to October give the clearest game viewing, while January and February often bring the biggest flamingo flocks to the lake. April and May are quiet and green, with some forest trails muddy after rain.

Most visitors do it as a half-day or full-day game drive, often on the way to or from Ngorongoro and the Serengeti. It rewards a full day if bird photography is a priority.

Is Manyara good for birdwatching?

Excellent ? over 400 species have been recorded, from flamingo and pelican on the lake to hornbills and turacos in the forest, making it one of the richest birding parks on the northern circuit.
