Safari Details

This four-day safari is built around culture as much as game viewing, based from a single lodge in Mto wa Mbu to keep transfers short. After a day of big game in Tarangire, you head south to Lake Eyasi to spend time with the Hadzabe, one of the last hunter-gatherer peoples on earth, and the Datoga, semi-nomadic pastoralists and traditional blacksmiths — two genuinely different ways of life within an hour of each other.

Day three stays local, exploring Mto wa Mbu itself on foot: village walks, food and interaction with the community that has made this small Rift Valley town one of the most culturally diverse in Tanzania. The trip closes with a morning game drive at Lake Manyara before the drive back to Arusha.

Depart Arusha in the morning for the two-hour drive to Tarangire National Park. Spend the day on a game drive along the Tarangire River, known for hosting some of the largest elephant herds in Africa alongside zebra, wildebeest and giraffe, all set among the park's iconic ancient baobab trees. In the late afternoon, continue the drive to Mto wa Mbu for dinner and overnight at My Africa.

After an early breakfast, drive south to Lake Eyasi with packed lunch boxes for the day. Spend the morning with the Hadzabe, one of the last true hunter-gatherer peoples on earth, joining a hunting or foraging walk led by the family hosting you. In the afternoon, visit the Datoga, semi-nomadic pastoralists and skilled blacksmiths, and watch tools, arrowheads and jewellery being forged by hand over a charcoal fire the traditional way. Return to Mto wa Mbu in the evening for dinner and overnight at My Africa.

Spend the day exploring Mto wa Mbu itself, a farming and trading town at the base of the Rift Valley escarpment where more than a hundred ethnic groups live and work side by side. A local guide leads a village walk through banana, rice and coffee plantations, with a local food experience and time to interact directly with the community — a slower, grounded day between the wildlife and culture on either side of it.

After breakfast, drive the short distance to Lake Manyara National Park for a morning game drive through groundwater forest, open grassland and the flamingo-fringed shallows of the soda lake. Manyara is known for its tree-climbing lions and rich birdlife, with elephant, buffalo and giraffe often seen along the lakeshore. After lunch, continue the drive back to Arusha, arriving in the afternoon where your safari ends.

Is the Hadzabe and Datoga visit respectful and ethical?

We work through local guides who have long-standing relationships with specific Hadzabe and Datoga families, and a fair visit fee goes directly to the community hosting you rather than a fixed tourist show.

How early does the Lake Eyasi day start?

Early — Hadzabe hunting parties leave at first light, so we depart Mto wa Mbu after an early breakfast to reach Lake Eyasi in time to join them, with packed lunch boxes for the day.

Where do we stay for all three nights?

At My Africa in Mto wa Mbu, used as a single base for the whole safari — this keeps the itinerary simple, with no need to pack and move each day.

Is this trip physically demanding?

The Lake Eyasi walk with the Hadzabe covers uneven bush terrain and can run a couple of hours, while the Mto wa Mbu day is flatter and easier — both are adaptable to the group's pace.

Can Ngorongoro Crater be added to this itinerary?
