Overview
The Machame Route — the "Whiskey Route" — is the most scenic way to Uhuru Peak, and its climb-high-sleep-low profile gives you a real chance at the summit.
Seven days take you from rainforest through the Shira Plateau, past the Lava Tower at 4,600 m and up the Barranco Wall, before the midnight push to the roof of Africa. You descend through moorland to Mweka on the final day.
Your crew is fully certified: a lead guide and assistant guides, a cook and porters, with mountain tents, oxygen and a pulse oximeter carried throughout. Park fees, camping fees and rescue fees are all included.
Registration at the gate, then five to six hours climbing through dense rainforest. It is humid, often wet underfoot, and full of colobus monkeys and birdsong. Camp sits at the top edge of the forest belt.
Activities
Rain is likely in the forest whatever the season. Waterproofs go at the top of your daypack, not in the porter bag.
The forest ends abruptly and the moorland begins — giant lobelia, groundsel, and the first clear view of Kibo. A shorter day, deliberately, to start the acclimatisation properly.
Activities
Altitude starts to be noticeable here. Drink more water than you think you need.
The classic climb-high-sleep-low day: up to 4,600 m at the Lava Tower for lunch, then back down 600 m to Barranco. You end the day lower than you had lunch, and that is exactly what makes the summit possible.
Activities
The hardest acclimatisation day. A headache at the Lava Tower is common and passes on the descent — tell your guide either way.
The morning starts with the Barranco Wall — a scramble rather than a climb, hands needed in a few places, and nothing technical. Short day after that, with the afternoon at camp resting.
Activities
Leave trekking poles strapped to your pack for the wall — you will want both hands.
A steady climb across alpine desert to Barafu, the base camp for the summit push. You eat early, sleep early, and are woken before midnight.
Activities
Lay everything out before you sleep. You will be dressing in the dark at 23:00.
You leave around midnight and climb by headtorch to Stella Point on the crater rim, reaching Uhuru Peak — 5,895 m, the roof of Africa — around sunrise. Then the long descent: back to Barafu for a rest and a meal, and on down to Mweka Camp in the forest.
Activities
The longest and coldest day of the trek. Water bladders freeze at this altitude — carry bottles, upside down, in an insulated sleeve.
A three-hour descent through the rainforest to the gate, where summit certificates are issued and you say goodbye to the crew. Transfer back to Moshi or Arusha for the first proper shower in a week.
Activities
Crew tips are handled at the gate. Your guide will explain the customary amounts beforehand — bring cash in USD or TZS.
There is no technical climbing on the Machame route — it is a long walk at altitude, with one scramble at the Barranco Wall where you use your hands. If you can walk for six hours on consecutive days, you are fit enough. Altitude, not fitness, is what turns people back.
Above 85% on this itinerary. Five-day routes drop below 50%, which is why we do not sell them — the extra nights are what let your body adjust.
Broken-in boots, a four-season sleeping bag, waterproofs, and layers for temperatures from 30°C in the forest to -15°C on summit night. We send a full kit list on booking, and sleeping bags and jackets can be hired in Moshi.
The standard guidance is roughly 10% of the trek price, split across the guides, cook and porters. Your lead guide explains the customary breakdown before the last day. Bring it in cash — USD or Tanzanian shillings.
